The Valley Guild, purchased and renovated the house with the purpose of showcasing Salinas Valley produce. It was opened to the public as a restaurant on February 27, 1974 —which was the 72nd anniversary of John Steinbeck's birth. Oprah Winfrey and members of her book club visited the Steinbeck House in September of 2003, and her show was filmed on the front lawn of the House. It is now a literary landmark.
