Bodega Bay

In 1963, the coastal town of Bodega Bay, with its white clapboard houses, appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's classic film, "The Birds." Coincedentally another well known horror movie "Puppet Master" was also filmed in Bodega Bay. Few scenes from the adventure film "Goonies" were also shot here. It is located 40 miles from San Francisco and 20 miles from Santa Rosa. Bodega Bay was first discovered by the famous explorer Juan Francisco Bodega in 1775, hence it's namesake.

Bodega Head, the small peninsula sheltering Bodega Bay, is one of California's best spots for whale-watching. Here California visitors can also play golf, watch for various bird species, dig for clams, view the surf and go fishing. In the evening, ships unloads their daily catch at the Tides Wharf dock.

Sonoma Coast State Beach starts at the north part of Bodega Bay. The 10 separated beaches are 10-miles (16-km) long. At the top north point lies the beautiful small town called Jenner. Here the Russian River flows into the Pacific Ocean. Hundreds of seals can be seen lying in the sun. The most interesting time to observe the seals is the period, where the new seal puppies are born, so if possible try to see this any time between March and June.

Local Californian surfers know that Bodega Bay is no stranger to the Great White Shark. This is not surprising considering that the bay has an abundance of marine life including the aformentioned seals.
