Mission San Diego de Alcala
Mission San Diego de Alcala was originally located at where today is Junipero Serra Museum in Presidio Park, but later it was moved to the new location - Mission Valley in 1774. The reason of relocating was more fertile land and a large number of potential Native American converts. Mission San Diego de Alcala got its name from St. Didacus, who was born in Alcala, Spain, in 1400.
The first mission in the California chain is surrounded by freeways and new buildings, but it could still keep its peaceful atmosphere. In the last century the mission was restored to its original appearance of year 1813.
The church still has some of the important original materials, like for example timbers over its doorways, original floor tiles, and the adobe bricks in the baptistery.
In the garden you can see a wonderful Campanario bell tower, and also a statue of St. Francis.
There is also a small museum in the Mission built to honor first Christian martyr, Padre Luis Jayme, who was murdered when 600 Native Americans attacked the mission in 1775.
Visitor Center Museum and Gift Shop Hours: Open 9:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. daily.
