California Redwoods

Making the top ten list of the must see locations in California is Redwood Country, the habitat of the Sequoia Sempervirens, the coastal redwood, a tree whose ancestors date to the age of the dinosaurs. These giants also earn the award as the world's tallest tree, world's tallest living thing for that matter. These "ambassadors from another time" as John Steinbeck called them, inhabit a thirty mile wide coastal fog belt. Stretching 450 miles from the Monterey area, north to Oregon, these redwoods have survived for over two millenia and reach heights of over 350 feet! Not only is their height impressive, but their diameters can be greater than 20 feet. The many drive-through trees in northern California will give you a first-hand experience to this fact. (See end of article for a few drive-through tree locations).

In Redwood country their is a sense of peace and solitude that can't be compared to anywhere else.  The trees form a cathedral overhead, and cast a cool deep shadow across the forest floor. Ferns and a few small animals are all that live amongst these giants.

The Redwood highway, route 101, leads north to the tallest, most dense forests of Redwoods. At Richardson Grove Park, the road winds straight through the very center of a magnificent grove.

North of Garberville, follow the Avenue of the Giants, which is a 33-mile alternative route, which parallels highway 101, and is encompassed by Humbolt Redwoods State Park. This 52,000 acre preserve has some of the finest forest land found anywhere. Avenue of the Giants continues through a handful of towns, then rejoins highway 101, where it heads north to Eureka.
